Forest Certification is a concept that originated in the 1990's and is growing quickly to accommodate the need and interest for responsible forest management and the growing interest in green building. What is FSC certification?
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is a process of protecting the world's forest by encouraging responsible forestry practices. It is a voluntary practice with no direct role from government. The FSC is an international organization. You can find out more about being FSC certified.
Who can be FSC certified?
Landowners and timber companies may become certified if they have used FSC standards for managing their timber. Independent, certification organizations, accredited by FSC, assess the forest management practices to determine if standards have been met. Manufacturing companies can be FSC certified if they have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources. This is called a chain of custody certification and assures the products are FSC certified. Consumers can look for and request the FSC label as a trusted source of responsible forest management.
Who supports FSC certification?
Trusted environmental organizations including Greenpeace, National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, and World Wildlife Fund all support and encourage FSC certification.
